Is ear pain after surgery more frequent?
« on: December 21, 2010, 03:06:49 pm »
I am having sharp intermitant ear pain 11 wks out from translab surgery. It feels like an intense
ear ache for an hour or two then goes away. Its been going on for 2 weeks. Is it more likely to
get ear infections in the now deaf ear after surgery?  I see the ENT on Jan 4 so I guess I'll find
out :)

Hi    I am 13 weeks out and I also get some ear pain. Before surgery, I had this pain constantly.  Now, it comes and goes.  And it isnt as intense.  When I have the ache, I use the heating pad.  Sometimes at night when I am laying down I get that "guitar string" sound.  Now that is strange!!  I go back to the ENT surgeon in January and added this to my list of questions!

Like others' have said, check with your Doc, I remember having sharp pains also past the 11 week mark. I still have some hearing, but never experienced a infection, Ha Ha except that was the diagnosis for about 4 months untill the MRI. A warm compress may help, good luck to ya.

I started to get occasional sharp ear pain about 8 weeks after my translab, though I did not have any ear pain before the surgery. I am now about 13-14 weeks post surgery and have found out that the tumor (which was debulked but not removed) is regrowing fairly rapidly. So, I'm not sure if my current ear pain is due to the prior surgery (similar to the other lightning pains in my scalp as the nerves wake up), or caused by pressure from the regrowing tumor. (My neurosurgeon has insisted that its not from the tumor itself, but I'm not so sure based on other posts I've seen.) I have noticed that it is worse if I lay my head on that side, or bend over frequently as during yoga.

Though only your doctor could rule out an infection, it seems that ear pain may be somehow associated with the AN itself and/or the surgery.
Right AN diagnosed Sept. 2010 - 4 cm x 3 cm x 3 cm
Debulked via translab Sept. 2010
Removed at House Feb. 2011
CSF leak with blind sac closure and lumbar drain March 2011
Unresponsive facial nerve, platinum weight

GramaSuby:

I didn't have ANY pain before surgery. After surgery, a have gotten earaches on occassion. They're usually accompanied by a headache. However, I have not gotten any ear infections since surgery.

Syl,
Not sure if its an infection per say since I don't have any fever but it SURE feels like an ear infection. Also no pain prior to surgery.
