Noise Cancellation Headphones
« on: September 28, 2013, 11:44:59 am »
A recent conversation with a specialist lead me to this question:  does anyone have a recommendation for noise-canceling headphones?  Since I've lost hearing in my AN ear, it was recommended strongly that I protect the hearing in my "good" ear.

Does anyone use these and with enough success that they recommend a pair?

Thanks.

Some things in my life need to matter less, and other things in my life need to matter more.  So yes, I'm taking this as a "lesson learned experience."

Depends on what you want to protect your hearing from.

Work related noise?

Shooting?

Something else?

There are different ear protection devices for different scenarios. The electronic devices might work but they also might not be the best way to go.

A neurosurgeon with whom I was speaking about my tinnitus told me that it was important to protect both the hearing in my AN hear (what's left of my hearing) but also reiterated the importance of preserving the hearing in my "good" ear because it's compensating heavily due to my poor ear.   He recommended that I wear noise-cancelling headphones.

After investigating before Christmas, and asking Santa to help me out, I received a pair of Bose QuietComfort 15 Noise-Cancelling Headphones (QC15).  Regrettably, they're not cheap (about $300/pair).  However, they have been working beautifully.    I wear them on the train, on the plane, on the subway, and in areas where I need to drown out extraneous noise.   I can still hear (ie, the flight attendant speaking) but it really "cancels" out other unnecessary noises and helps the sound quality of things around me.

Despite the price, I do recommend them for anyone else who's concerned about preserving their hearing status.  I've been using them for nearly two months now and very pleased.

I`ve been using cotton balls any time I feel there will be a noise problem somewhere. Its worked fine muffeling the sound intake and at the same time not cutting off your hearing to the point you can`t communicate. Best wishes, Mickey

Then you are getting your money's worth.

Last time I took the NY subway (many years ago) I was amazed that the entire population of NYC wasn't deaf as a post from all that noise.

How would you like to be working on the NYC tracks for over 20 years? Yea thats me... It was necessary to have you hearing for your personal safety and without it I probably wouldn`t be posting this message.  I did the best to safeguard my hearing but most transit workers face this occupational hazard. I`ve been W+W with approx. 1cm AN going into 7th year stable.  My AN ear is a little impaired but very fuctional other ear is good along with tinnitus. 7+ years is also around when I retired and basicly doin good under the circumstances... Best wishes, Mickey P.S.  W+W Brigade!

Hi Patrick!

How much of your hearing have you lost since your Gamma Knife treatment...any idea?

I'm going the end of this month to have mine tested and see what's going on.

Cathie.
Diagnosed: June 2012, right side AN 1.8cm
June 2013: AN has grown to 2.4 cm.

Hi Cathie,

I lost 30%.  I had a hearing test in February 2013, GK in April 2013, and in October 2013 the audiologist compared October to February and noted I had lost 30% in my AN ear, mostly high pitches (which has impacted tinnitus).   Having said that, I have noticed no further hearing loss since about October so am hopeful that things are stabilizing....thus my desire for the headphones to keep protecting what I have.

I agree with Arizona Jack....the headphones were expensive but believe they have been "valuable" and gotten my money's worth.
