Occipital nerve stimulator implant
« on: May 29, 2014, 11:33:33 pm »
My AN surgery was 11/25/08. I have had horrific head pain from the beginning.
Tried every med out there, just about done everything I was asked to do and try with little to no relief until I found a pain specialist that has been giving me from 6-8 nerve blocks in the back of my head for the last 2 years.
He has suggested I have the Occipital Nerve stimulation implant.  They said it might help the pain but not take it away completely.
Has anyone tried this and if so what were your results ? On the pain scale mine is an average 8.
When I sneeze it is like a grenade goes off inside my head. Doc says implant will not help that or the balance problems.
I have had to have 2 cataract surgeries because of the steroids in the nerve blocks, so worried about continuing them. The hope was after the first few the nerves would calm down but that did not happen. All comments needed.

I had a "pacemaker for pain" implanted three years ago and it gave me back my life!  I had tried all manner of treatments and rejected having another surgery.  As you probably know, you have to undergo a trial period to see if the stimulator gives you any relief.  In my case, the relief was dramatic and immediate,  so I had the stimulator implanted.  It is an outpatient procedure; you are awake for part of it so that the doc can appropriately place the "wires" to ensure that they  are in the right spot.  (I didn't feel any pain during that part of the procedure.)  I went to work the next day.

It may not take away all of the pain, but in my case, it has given me sufficient relief that I was able to resume many activities that I wasn't able to post-surgery, or approached doing with trepidation, lest they trigger a brainwreck.

You have to periodically re-charge the battery; I do it every night  It is a small inconvenience but well worth it considering the benefits I have experienced.

My doc posted an interview with me on his website:  dcpaindoc.com

Feel free to pm me with any questions.
