post op questions
« on: March 24, 2015, 10:43:11 am »
Hello, this is my first time to post but I've read many post here leading up to my husband's 2cm AN translab surgery Feb 23, 2015. It's been 4 weeks and although he seems to improve he has set backs too. He started vomiting last week and DR said it was due to brain swelling. Another round of steroids. Does anyone here have to keep going back on steroids to avoid the swelling?

Hi redw41 and welcome to this forum .....

The recovery from AN surgery is full of ups, downs, and plateaus so that part is not too unusual.  Vomiting starting at four weeks post-op is a bit unusual, but there may be others on this forum who have experienced that.

I did not personally experience having to go back on steroids after the initial period of time on them, plus a count down.

Hopefully this round will be the end of any brain swelling for him.

Thoughts and prayers .....

Everyone starts with steroids day of surgery and the it tapers over ten to fourteen days.  Once the steroids stop, complications from surgery can start. Delayed complications are common and some people do have to resume steroids, but not all.

The steroid use depends on what each drs protocol is with them.  I never went home on any for the first 3 surgeries and you only had them IV while there.    You did go home then orally if had some issue that needed them and taper off.    So every hospital may do it different.       I did have to take them the last surgery at home due to some issues I had.                   Cheryl R
