2 surgeries to remove a 2.5cm tumor?
« on: February 09, 2018, 09:38:24 pm »
The daughter of a dear friend of 35+ yrs, was in surgery for over 13 hours today to remove an acoustic neuroma (2.5cm) that was pressing on her brain stem. They were only able to remove a small portion of it and are going to give her body a few days to rest before going back in a second time. Has anyone ever heard of multiple surgeries to remove this tumor? I was concerned to begin with as the 75 year old neurosurgeon doing the procedure, wasn’t necessarily a ‘specialist’ in the resection of acoustic neuromas. Personally, if I decided to have mine removed, I wouldn’t let anyone near me unless they had done this procedure hundreds of times! (At the very least!)
Has anyone required multiple surgeries to remove their acoustic neuroma? Please, let me know if this is a common thing so I can reassure my friend!

Hi,
Sorry about her ordeal. I hope others will respond also.

I don’t believe I have read of anyone having a second surgery for removal of the tumor, not so soon anyway ,,, but it is common for some doctors to do a subtotal removal leaving a sliver of tumor along the facial nerve. But that is  usually done with the expectation of preforming radiation a little later on if that sliver grows after watching it with follow up MRIs.

Like I say, maybe others will respond.
I wish her well,, it’s a hard surgery for sure. Mine was 12 hours too,,,

She was just released from a hospital in St Paul, Minnesota. They are now looking at Cyber knife to remove the remainder of the tumor. The doctors had told her that there was a 97% chance of the tumor being malignant because she had radiation at age 4, for leukemia. The portion they removed was benign and they are waiting on the results of the needle biopsy done on the portion that was left.

Thank you so much for the update! I am so glad she is strong enough to be out of the hospital.

I am glad it was benign and hope the needle biopsy will return the same.

Prayers for continued improvement,,
