USING HYDROGEN PEROXIDE
« on: April 13, 2008, 07:12:05 am »
I have had monthly outbreaks around my BAHA post for over a year. Someone told me to use Hydrogen Peroxide around the abuttment before putting the ointment on it. Well, I've been doing that off and on now for 2 mts. I may be the only one out there that didn't know this but I have bleached out a section of hair under my BAHA site from the peroxide that has run into my hair. I didn't even know this till someone asked me why my hair was a different color in back. When I get ready in the morning my hair was wet when I put the peroxide on and then would dry it. So be careful if you are using it not to let it run into your hair!!

Ellis -

thanks for telling us.  I would have never thought about the bleaching effect of hydrogen peroxide.

I know that it can bleach certain fabrics and in the past it was used for bleaching hair, so I guess it makes sense, but I would have never made the connection.

My doc has never recommended hydrogen peroxide for my BAHA site, but I have read about people using it on the BAHA Users Forum.

Have you tried neosporin with zinc?  Someone on this forum told me about it and I used it during my healing process.  IMO it worked better than just plain neosporin.
Were you the one who recommended it to me?  If not, you might want to try it.

I don't actually "make" trouble..just kind of attract it, fine tune it, and apply it in new and exciting ways

Jan,

I use the neosporin with zinc too! Sam Rush told me about an antibiotic power he was using that cleared his up. I sent him an e-mail for more information on it. I am so tired of the flare ups and the BAHA brush seems to make it worse when I use it. I use a q-tip now to clean around the post. I have slowed down on the use of peroxide because of the bleached out hair. I got a haircut yesterday thinking it would cut most of it out but you can still see it. O well!!

Don't worry about it too much, Ellis - it will grow out eventually.

I found that when I was using a toothbrush to clean my site it was irritating the skin a lot, so I stopped using it.
Figured I'd start again once I'm a little more healed.

Well I guess I am just a tuff old bird as I've been cleaning mine with alcohol and cotton pads, my problem is my hair is so thick, course and grows so fast I'm not sure how that's going to work just yet but i keep it high and tight so we will see, my barber is going to get a surprise.

Alcohol  :o  Ouch!

My hair is growing closer to the fixture than I thought it should, but the doc says it's just fine.

The first haircut is interesting ::)

That settles it - no peroxide for me - people might mistake the lightened hair for more greys!  Don't need any help in that department!
